{"id":844,"date":"2013-10-10T17:42:31","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T17:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andrewwheen.com\/?p=844"},"modified":"2013-10-10T17:44:09","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T17:44:09","slug":"theres-nothing-that-a-wompom-cannot-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andrewwheen.com\/index.php\/2013\/10\/10\/theres-nothing-that-a-wompom-cannot-do\/","title":{"rendered":"There\u2019s Nothing that a Wompom Cannot Do!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flanders and Swann used to sing an amusing song about <a title=\"The Wompom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nyanko.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk\/fas\/bestiary_wompom.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Wompom<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> &#8211; an imaginary animal \/ vegetable hybrid with an amazing range of properties. This song, which is still available on iTunes, often comes to mind when I\u2019m reading about the latest \u201cwonder material\u201d:\u00a0 Graphene.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Graphene was discovered by two researchers at the University of Manchester<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(<a title=\"The story of Graphene\" href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/story\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kostya Novoselov and Andre Geim<\/a>) while attempting to construct a transistor out of graphite. They needed to produce a sheet of graphite that was as thin as possible, and their method was astonishingly simple \u2013 they simply suck a flake of graphite on a piece of sticky tape, folded the tape over and them pulled it apart. To their astonishment, they found that this process sometimes produced slivers of graphite that were just one atom thick. Even more amazingly, these films of graphite turned out to be mechanically stable. It was the thinnest material that had ever been produced. As in the case of the Wompom:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">You can ice it, You can dice it,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">You can pare it, You can slice it<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_846\" style=\"width: 569px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-846\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-846\" alt=\"Graphene\" src=\"http:\/\/andrewwheen.com\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Graphene_xyz-2-300x183.jpg\" width=\"559\" height=\"349\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphene<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Graphene is harder than diamond and three hundred times stronger than steel, yet it is incredibly flexible and the world\u2019s best conductor of electricity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Now the thick inner shell of a Wompom<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">You can mould with a finger and thumb.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Though soft when you began it<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">It&#8217;ll set as hard as granite<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">And it&#8217;s quite as light as aluminium<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">There is such an extraordinary range of potential uses for grapheme that there isn\u2019t space to list them all here. However, to avoid diverging too far from the theme of this blog, some uses that may have an impact on telecoms include much faster integrated circuits, spray-on solar panels, massively increased battery capacities and lower cost displays that are simpler to recycle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">So we make what we like from the Wompom,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">And that proves very useful indeed.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">From streets full of houses<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">To the buttons on your trousers<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">With a Wompom you have everything you need.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">With apologies to my younger readers who may never have heard of Flanders and Swann. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flanders and Swann used to sing an amusing song about the Wompom &#8211; an imaginary animal \/ vegetable hybrid with an amazing range of properties.
